Operational technology (OT) uses a combination of specialised hardware and software to manage industrial machines and systems, including advanced tools and equipment used in energy production, manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, robotics, telecommunications, as well as waste and water management.

A fast evolving market and a slew of national and international directives and regulations such as NIS2, CER and its German implementation, KRITIS-DachG, IEC 62443, TRBS 1115-1 and others are increasingly pushing OT into the focus of cybersecurity.  As organisations strive to harvest more and more data from machines, the weave of hardware and software will become tighter. That’s why companies need to take a converged cybersecurity approach in order to best protect their physical infrastructure as well as the information it contains.
